Roof Gardens

Roof GardenIntensive roof gardens include plantings of grass-covered areas and small shrubs to create good, green open spaces which can retain and manage rainwater.

At their best they provide varied habitats (when planted with indigenous flora) for the native birds and insect populations floating around.

Roof gardens produce oxygen and remove carbon dioxide, improving the quality of the air and they also provide good insulation. The construction of a green roof requires the use of a contractor who has previous experience in these matters.

Roof gardens do require statutory approval but to be honest most councils will readily endorse them at the moment, with the whole green issue taking off and everything.

Balconies, with the use of containers, are an ideal location for a mini-garden. When choosing plants for your balcony, it's important to consider whether your location is in full sun, shade, or partial shade.
